Parents Visa

Parent (Permanent) Visa (Subclass 103)

This visa allows parents to migrate to Australia permanently to join their children who are living in Australia. This visa requires that you be sponsored by your child, or another eligible sponsor, in Australia.

Visa holder entitlements


  • This visa allows you and your accompanying partner and dependent family members to live as permanent residents in Australia. You can also
  • work and study in Australia
  • receive subsidised healthcare through Medicare and the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS)
  • access certain social security payments (subject to waiting periods)
  • be eligible to apply for Australian citizenship (subject to the residency eligibility criteria)
  • sponsor people for permanent residence (subject to waiting periods)


Contributory Parent (Migrant) Visa (Subclass 143)
A permanent visa for parents with children living in Australia. This visa costs more than the Parent visa but is generally processed faster.

Visa holder entitlements

This visa allows you, your accompanying partner and dependent family members to live as permanent residents in Australia. You can also


  • work and study in Australia
  • receive subsidised healthcare through Medicare and the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS)
  • access certain social security payments (subject to waiting periods)
  • be eligible to apply for Australian citizenship (subject to the residency eligibility criteria
  • sponsor people for permanent residence (subject to waiting periods).



ContributoryParent (Temporary) Visa (Subclass 173)

This visa is for parents outside of Australia, who have children residing in Australia, to enter and live in Australia for two years. You cannot extend or renew this visa.If you are granted this visa and want to live in Australia permanently, you must apply for a permanent visa before this temporary visa expires. This visa requires that you be sponsored by your child, or another eligible sponsor, in Australia.

Visa holder entitlements

This visa allows you and your accompanying partner and dependent family members to live as a temporary resident in Australia for two years. You can also


  • have access to Australia's medical expenses and hospital care assistance scheme, Medicare
  • work in Australia
  • study, but you are not eligible to apply for Austudy.


Contributory Parent (Migrant) Visa (from Subclass 173 to Subclass 143)

This visa is for you if you hold a Contributory Parent (Temporary) visa (Subclass 173) and wants to apply for the permanent Contributory Parent (Migrant) visa (subclass 143). You can apply for this visa any time before your Contributory Parent (Temporary) visa expires. Your partner and other family members may be included in your application if they meet certain requirements.
